In the context of the EU CleanCOALtech - “Educational and training systems for clean coal technologies” (the Lifelong Learning Programme Leonardo da Vinci) project activities, a training session has taken place in Edinburgh from the 14th to the 18th of October. Participants from Universitatea Politehnica Bucuresti (Romania), the Centre for Renewable Energy Sources and Saving (Greece) and Institul de Studii si Proiectari Energetice (Romania) attended the training session, which was organised in the Kings Buildings campus. The attendees followed lectures and hands-on sessions by Professor Stefano Brandani, Dr Maria-Chiara Ferrari, Dr Hyungwoong Ahn, Dr Mathieu Lucquiaud, Mr Mauro Luberti and Ms Zoe Kapetaki from the School of Engineering, and Dr Mark Wilkinson and Dr Leslie Mabon from the School of Geosciences. The training material covered introduction in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), conventional power plants, separation processes in CCS and emissions control technologies. Geology and CO2 storage aspects were covered as well along with lectures on public engagement and demonstration of the CCS interactive from Mr Peter Reid. The participants also attended a field trip in Doosan Power Systems premises in Renfrew.
The outcomes included innovative training methods and upgraded know-how, and the formation of six trainees that will then deliver the material in their own countries. The production of handbooks with a professional content and modern template in four languages and a training kit in four languages and 150 trained specialists and non-specialists are planned as near future activities within the project.
